1. JBIMS: What It Is and Where It Stands
Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) is the University of Mumbai's Department of Management Studies. The institute's own About page states it was founded in 1965 by the University of Mumbai and that it attained autonomy in 2014. Its official AY2025-26 fee-structure sheets carry the letterhead line "Re-accredited A++ Grade (CGPA 3.65) by NAAC" (AY2025-26, JBIMS official MMS fee structure sheets), and the institute's own About page dates the founding to 1965. It is a government university department, not a private, deemed or IIM institution.
The campus is a single building at Dadabhai Naoroji House, 164, Backbay Reclamation, H.T. Parekh Marg, Churchgate, in south Mumbai. The programmes listed on the official site are:
- Master of Management Studies (MMS) β two years full time, with specialisations in Finance, Marketing, Operations & Supply Chain Management, Human Resources, and Systems & Digital Business
- M.Sc. in Finance β two years full time, launched in 2013
- Master in Human Resource Development (MHRD) β two years full time; the official admission-process document states the course was set up in 2019
- Part-time MMS β three years, for working professionals
- Ph.D. in Management Studies
One thing to know before you start comparing rank tables: JBIMS does not appear in the NIRF Management rankings for 2023, 2024 or 2025 β neither in the ranked lists nor in the published list of participating institutes. There is no NIRF rank, and no NIRF-audited median salary, to cite for this institute.
2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get In
The three full-time programmes use two completely different doors.
MMS is filled entirely through the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) run by DTE Maharashtra and the State CET Cell. The official course page states selection is "conducted through the common admission process i.e. CAP Rounds; carried out by DTE, Maharashtra" β JBIMS publishes no separate written test, group discussion or interview stage for MMS. The State CET Cell seat matrix for AY2025-26 shows the split:
| Seat type (MMS, AY2025-26) | Seats |
|---|---|
| Total CAP seats | 120 |
| Maharashtra State seats | 102 |
| All India seats | 18 |
| Minority seats | 0 |
| Institute (management) seats | 0 |
| EWS seats | 12 |
| TFWS seats | 6 |
These are State Level seats, so no home-university filter applies within the Maharashtra quota (AY2025-26, State CET Cell provisional seat distribution).
For AY2026-27 the CAP notice dated 02/07/2026 requires Maharashtra State candidature applicants to hold a non-zero MAH-MBA/MMS-CET 2026 score. All India candidature applicants may instead use a non-zero positive score in CET, CAT, CMAT, XAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT. That notice covers the process up to the merit list: registration 02β12 July 2026, verification to 13 July, provisional merit list 15 July, final merit list 20 July 2026. Candidates who did not register for MAH-MBA/MMS-CET 2026 pay βΉ1,500 (βΉ1,300 for reserved-category, PWD, orphan and transgender candidates of Maharashtra).
M.Sc. Finance and MHRD are run by JBIMS itself, on its own portal. The published weightages for the 2026-28 batches are:
- M.Sc. Finance β Application Rating Score 60% plus In-Person Assessment 40%. Inside the ARS: exam score 75, past academic record 15, extra-curriculars and work experience 5, diversity 5. Inside the assessment: Group Activity 20, Personal Interview 60, Writing Aptitude Test 20. About 400 candidates are called; the minimum total score to be considered is 50 (General), 45 (Reserved).
- MHRD β CET/CAT percentile 50%, In-Person Assessment 50%. GA is marked out of 40, PI out of 50, and the WAT (a 300-word Statement of Purpose essay) out of 10. About 300 applicants are shortlisted.
3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)
JBIMS publishes a signed, itemised MMS fee structure on its announcements page. The figures below are from the sheets for the Academic Year 2025-26, signed by the Director β the most recent MMS fee sheets published on jbims.edu at the time of writing.
| Head (MMS, AY2025-26) | Open / EWS / CIWGC | SC, ST, VJ-DT, NT(A-D), OBC, SBC, SEBC, Orphan |
|---|---|---|
| First year grand total | βΉ4,22,175 | βΉ1,69,675 |
| Second year grand total | βΉ4,11,300 | βΉ1,58,800 |
| Tuition fee (per year) | βΉ1,57,500 | Nil |
| Development fee (per year) | βΉ73,500 | βΉ73,500 |
| Project fee (per year) | βΉ65,000 | βΉ65,000 |
| Digital / computer facility / laboratory (per year) | βΉ50,000 | Nil |
| Library fee (per year) | βΉ40,000 | Nil |
| Refundable (caution money + library deposit, year 1) | βΉ10,000 | βΉ10,000 |
All figures: AY2025-26, JBIMS official MMS fee structure sheets. Adding the institute's own two published year-wise grand totals gives βΉ8,33,475 across two years for the Open category and βΉ3,28,475 for the listed reserved categories β of which βΉ10,000 in the first year is refundable. That is the institute's own arithmetic reproduced, not an estimate.
The AY2026-27 MMS fee is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. JBIMS publishes it as a scanned sheet on the "MMS CAP Round Admission" announcement each cycle, so check jbims.edu before reporting. The M.Sc. Finance and MHRD programme fees for AY2026-27 are also [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. What is published for AY2026-27 is the M.Sc. Finance application form fee of βΉ2,500, non-refundable (AY2026-27, JBIMS M.Sc. Finance admission notice, batch 2026-28).
4. Cutoffs and Shortlisting: How to Read Them
For MMS, the only cutoff that matters is the CAP allotment cut-off published by the State CET Cell, institute by institute and category by category. The table below is JBIMS (institute code 3001), MMS (choice code 0300110210), State Level Seats, Stage-I, CAP Round-I, AY2025-26. The merit number is the State general merit number at which that category closed; the merit score is the CET percentile.
| Category | Closing merit no. | Merit score |
|---|---|---|
| Open (GOPENS) | 47 | 99.94 |
| TFWS | 57 | 99.93 |
| EWS | 107 | 99.87 |
| OBC (GOBCS) | 154 | 99.81 |
| SEBC (GSEBCS) | 179 | 99.78 |
| SC (GSCS) | 397 | 99.51 |
| ST (GSTS) | 1,739 | 97.33 |
Source: AY2025-26, State CET Cell "Cut Off Merit for Maharashtra & Minority Seats, CAP Round-I", MBA/MMS.
On the All India route the same round closed at merit number 25 with a merit score of 99.9907197 (AY2025-26, State CET Cell All India CAP Round-I cut-off list), where JBIMS and SIMSREE appeared jointly at the top of the published list. With 18 All India seats in the matrix, that is the tightest door in the building.
How to read these honestly: they are closing figures for one round only, and the CET Cell publishes a separate cut-off document for every CAP round β so check the round you are actually planning for. For M.Sc. Finance and MHRD the published numbers are eligibility thresholds, not allotment cut-offs: M.Sc. Finance 2026-28 requires CAT 2025 95.00 or MAH-MBA/MMS CET 2026 97.00 percentile for General, and MHRD requires CAT 85.00 or CET 90.00 for General (AY2026-27, JBIMS admission process documents).
5. Placements: What Is Verifiable
JBIMS publishes a unified final placement report covering all three full-time programmes. Every figure below is from that document for the batch of 2024-2026.
| Programme | Batch strength | Median CTC | Mean CTC | Highest CTC | Recruiters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MMS | 155 | βΉ26.15 LPA | βΉ26.67 LPA | βΉ80.00 LPA | 70+ |
| M.Sc. Finance | 41 | βΉ18.00 LPA | βΉ19.00 LPA | βΉ35.00 LPA | 40+ |
| MHRD | 32 | βΉ18.00 LPA | βΉ17.50 LPA | βΉ23.50 LPA | 35+ |
All figures: batch of 2024-2026, JBIMS official Unified Final Placement Report.
Read the median first, then read the gap. For MMS the mean (βΉ26.67 LPA) sits only about half a lakh above the median (βΉ26.15 LPA) even though the highest offer was βΉ80.00 LPA β a single very large number in a batch of 155 barely moves the average. The same report gives the top-10% average as βΉ38.25 LPA and the top-30% average as βΉ33.37 LPA, which is where the real spread lives. For MHRD the median (βΉ18.00 LPA) is above the mean (βΉ17.50 LPA), so that batch clusters at the upper end rather than being lifted by outliers.
For a year-on-year view, the MMS report for the batch of 2023-2025 shows batch strength 157, median βΉ26.15 LPA, mean βΉ26.48 LPA, highest βΉ55.60 LPA and 65+ recruiters (JBIMS official MMS Final Placement Report, batch of 2023-25). The median held flat across the two batches while the headline "highest" moved a great deal β which is exactly why the highest package is the least useful number on any placement page.
Two caveats the reports do not remove: these are CTC figures, not take-home, and because JBIMS does not participate in NIRF there is no independently audited median salary to cross-check them against.
6. Campus, Hostel and Living Costs
JBIMS operates from one building in Backbay Reclamation, Churchgate β the south Mumbai business district, not a suburban campus. The official site lists canteen, hostel, library and student life under Campus Life, and describes a library with a print books and journals collection, international financial and market-research databases, and the Knimbus m-Library service for on-campus and off-campus e-resource access.
Hostel and mess charges are [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. This matters more than it looks. Both AY2025-26 MMS fee sheets are entirely academic β tuition, development, project, digital facility, library, examination, plus small administrative heads. There is no hostel line, no mess line and no accommodation deposit anywhere on either sheet. So the βΉ4,22,175 first-year Open-category figure is not a living-inclusive number, and accommodation sits on top of it.
Because the institute publishes no accommodation tariff, the honest planning method is to ask the institute office directly at the time of reporting, and to budget south Mumbai accommodation separately if a hostel seat is not allotted. We will not print a number here that the institute has not published β rents in that part of the city vary too widely for an estimate to be anything other than a guess, and a guess in your admission budget is worse than a blank.
7. Who Should NOT Choose JBIMS
Some honest reasons to look elsewhere.
- You are outside Maharashtra and treating JBIMS as a realistic target. The AY2025-26 matrix carried 18 All India seats out of 120, and CAP Round-I closed at All India merit number 25. That is the very top of the national pool applying through this route, and a plan built on it needs a serious backup.
- You want a residential campus experience. This is a city-centre university department in a single building, not a large campus with hostels, sports complexes and a student township. If campus life is a big part of what you are buying, the fit is poor.
- You need a NIRF rank attached to your institute. JBIMS does not appear in NIRF Management 2023, 2024 or 2025, including the participating-institutes list. If a scholarship, an employer panel or a family expectation is keyed to a NIRF number, this institute cannot supply one.
- You have substantial work experience and want peers with the same. The MMS batch of 2024-2026 was 42% freshers with an average of 14 months of work experience (JBIMS placement report, batch of 2024-26). The classroom skews young.
- Your target sector sits far from finance. BFSI and investment banking accounted for 42% of MMS placements in that batch, with technology and e-commerce at 18% and consulting at 16%.
- Cash flow at reporting is tight. CAP requires the fee to be paid when you report to the institute, not later in the semester.
8. How JBIMS Compares
Compare on the door you have to walk through, not the brochure.
On CET percentile required, SIMSREE is the closest structural peer β same CAP list, same Churchgate neighbourhood, same MMS degree. In CAP Round-I for AY2025-26, JBIMS closed its State Level Open seats at merit number 47 (99.94) and SIMSREE at merit number 210 (99.75) β same document, same round, same category. On the All India route the two appeared together at the top of the published list at merit number 25.
One step wider on that same list, Welingkar Mumbai closed All India Round-I at merit number 72 (99.9707517), and Alkesh Dinesh Modi Institute β also a University of Mumbai department β closed its home-university Open seats at merit number 2,805 (95.49). All from the State CET Cell CAP Round-I cut-off documents for AY2025-26.
On exam route and brand portability the comparison changes shape. IIM Mumbai is ranked 6th in the NIRF 2024 Management ranking with a score of 74.73 (NIRF 2024, Management ranking) and admits through CAT and its own selection process. If CAT is your exam and you want a nationally ranked, independently audited brand, that is a different ladder. If MAH-MBA/MMS CET is your exam and you hold Maharashtra domicile, JBIMS and SIMSREE are the two names at the top of the state ladder, and the choice between them is settled by your percentile rather than by preference.
Check affordability before choice filling
Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.
Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter β your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions
Which entrance exams does JBIMS accept?
For MMS under Maharashtra State candidature, the AY2026-27 CAP notice requires a non-zero MAH-MBA/MMS-CET 2026 score. All India candidature applicants may instead use a non-zero positive score in CET, CAT, CMAT, XAT, ATMA, MAT or GMAT. M.Sc. Finance and MHRD run their own processes and accept only MAH-MBA/MMS CET 2026 or CAT 2025.
Do I need work experience to apply to JBIMS?
No. None of the three full-time programmes publishes a minimum work-experience requirement, and freshers are admitted every year β the MMS batch of 2024-2026 was 42% freshers with an average of 14 months of work experience. Work experience does carry weight in the M.Sc. Finance Application Rating Score, but it shares a five-point block with extra-curricular activities.
How does JBIMS shortlist candidates for M.Sc. Finance and MHRD?
Both apply a percentile filter and a past-academic-record filter first, then call shortlisted candidates for an In-Person Assessment. M.Sc. Finance calls roughly 400 candidates and weights the Application Rating Score 60% against the assessment 40%, with the personal interview carrying 60 of 100 assessment marks. MHRD calls roughly 300 and splits the weight equally between percentile and assessment.
Does JBIMS have a hostel, and what does it cost?
The official site lists a hostel under Campus Life, but JBIMS publishes no hostel or mess tariff, so the figure here is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]. Note that both AY2025-26 MMS fee sheets are purely academic β there is no accommodation line on either. Ask the institute office at the time of reporting, and budget south Mumbai accommodation separately from the published fee.
How do fee payment, education loans and scholarships work here?
Fees are paid to the institute when you report after CAP allotment, using the payment details published with each admission notice. The JBIMS financial-assistance page lists one institute-linked scheme: an endowment fund created by the MMS 1990 batch offering interest-free loans of up to 50% of the total fee paid, repayable on final placement. Category-based concessions apply through the reserved-category fee sheet.
How should I verify the latest JBIMS Mumbai admission route?
Start with the entrance and counselling route published by the institute or competent authority. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.
How should I read the JBIMS Mumbai cutoff shown on this page?
Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.
How do I confirm the complete fee for JBIMS Mumbai?
Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.
Extended admission FAQs
Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at JBIMS Mumbai?
No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.
Can anyone guarantee direct admission to JBIMS Mumbai?
No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.
Which documents should I prepare for JBIMS Mumbai admission?
Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.
What should I compare before placing JBIMS Mumbai in my preference list?
Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.
What if a current JBIMS Mumbai figure is still unverified?
Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.
How current is the information on this JBIMS Mumbai page?
The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.
How can Future Career Guidance help with JBIMS Mumbai admission?
We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.
Which source takes priority if two JBIMS Mumbai figures conflict?
Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
