1. MDI Gurgaon: What It Is and Where It Stands
Management Development Institute (MDI) is a standalone, AICTE-approved business school on Mehrauli Road, Sukhrali, Gurugram. The Management Development Institute Society was registered on 17 May 1972, and MDI's own milestones record credits the Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) with founding it to train managers in the financial and development banking sectors (mdi.ac.in official MDI Society and Milestones pages).
MDI is not affiliated to any university. Its AICTE Mandatory Disclosures list the affiliating university as "Not Applicable", which is why MDI awards post-graduate diplomas rather than degrees. The society's registered office is at IFCI Tower, 61 Nehru Place, New Delhi. MDI holds AMBA (UK) accreditation from 2005, SAQS from 2006 and AACSB (USA) from 2021, per its milestones page; the homepage records a five-year AMBA re-accreditation in April 2024.
In the government ranking, MDI was placed 9th with a score of 71.96 in the Management category (NIRF 2025, nirfindia.org), having been 11th with 66.85 the previous year (NIRF 2024, nirfindia.org).
Programmes and sanctioned intake, from MDI's AICTE Mandatory Disclosures (intake sanctioned 2024-25):
| Programme | Started | Duration | Intake | NBA accredited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PGDM (flagship) | 1994 | 2 years | 300 | Yes |
| PGDM-HRM | 2004 | 2 years | 120 | Yes |
| PGDM-International Business | 2006 | 2 years | 120 | Yes |
| PGDM-Business Analytics | 2023 | 2 years | 30 | No |
| PGDM-Business Management (executive) | 1988 | 18 months | 60 | No |
| PGDM-Public Policy and Management | 2006 | 18 months | 30 | No |
| Fellow Programme in Management | 1999 | 3-5 years | 20 | No |
2. Admission Route: How You Actually Get In
In one line: for the two-year PGDM programmes at Gurugram, CAT is the only entrance exam an Indian applicant can use β there is no state-quota or CAP-style counselling route, because MDI is an autonomous institute outside any state admission authority.
MDI's official admission pages state that CAT 2025 is mandatory for Indian candidates, and that a valid GMAT score is accepted only from NRI, PIO and foreign-national applicants. MDI Murshidabad, a separate campus, additionally accepts XAT 2026 β MDI Gurugram does not. The 18-month executive PGDM-Business Management is the exception: it accepts CAT, XAT or GMAT and requires a minimum of three years' post-qualification work experience as on 31 March 2026.
Eligibility for the two-year programmes, quoted from the official admission pages: at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA in both Class X and Class XII, plus a bachelor's degree of minimum three years' duration with at least 50% or equivalent CGPA in any discipline. PGDM-International Business requires a four-year bachelor's degree and a minimum of one year's work experience as on 31 January 2026. Final-year students may apply if they complete all requirements by 30 June 2026.
The stages are: shortlisting on the application form and CAT 2025 score, then Group Discussion, Written Analysis Test and Personal Interview held between February and April 2026 across multiple cities. MDI states that final selection considers CAT score, WAT-GD-PI performance, a behavioural assessment, academic merit, academic diversity, work experience and social diversity. The exact percentage weightage attached to each component is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27]: MDI names the components but does not publish the split on its admission pages. Percentage splits circulating on coaching and aggregator sites are not official β ask MDI admissions directly if the number matters to your planning.
3. Fee Structure (What Is Officially Published)
In one line: the officially published all-inclusive fee for the PGDM Batch of 2026-28 is βΉ26,55,310, and unusually for an Indian B-school, that figure already contains hostel room and mess charges.
The following breakdown is reproduced from MDI's official PGDM admission page for the 2026-28 batch. It applies to PGDM, PGDM-HRM and PGDM-Business Analytics.
| Component | Year 1 (βΉ) | Year 2 (βΉ) | Total (βΉ) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition fees | 9,61,505 | 9,61,505 | 19,23,010 |
| Boarding (mess) charges | 1,04,200 | 1,04,200 | 2,08,400 |
| Lodging (hostel) charges | 1,09,750 | 1,09,750 | 2,19,500 |
| Learning material fees | 62,000 | 62,000 | 1,24,000 |
| Student activities | 31,250 | 31,250 | 62,500 |
| Library fee | 37,700 | 37,700 | 75,400 |
| Alumni fee | 15,000 | β | 15,000 |
| Security deposit (refundable) | 27,500 | β | 27,500 |
| Total | 13,48,905 | 13,06,405 | 26,55,310 |
Source: AY2026-28, MDI Gurgaon official PGDM admission page. The security deposit of βΉ27,500 is stated to be refundable, so it is not a sunk cost. MDI publishes a payment schedule of three instalments running from April 2026 to May 2027. The NRI fee for the same batch is US$38,668.
MDI's AICTE Mandatory Disclosures give the fee trend for earlier intakes in lakhs: PGDM βΉ23.47 L (2022), βΉ24.16 L (2023), βΉ24.99 L (2024); PGDM-International Business βΉ27.50 L (2022), βΉ28.16 L (2023), βΉ29.58 L (2024). The application fee is βΉ3,000 for MDI Gurgaon alone, βΉ3,590 for both MDI campuses, and βΉ8,496 for NRI and foreign-national applicants, all inclusive of 18% GST. MDI's own note says it reserves the right to revise fees during the academic year with prior notice.
4. Cutoffs and Shortlisting: How to Read Them
In one line: MDI's AICTE Mandatory Disclosures put the CAT cutoff at the 92nd percentile for 2024 admission across PGDM, PGDM-HRM, PGDM-International Business and PGDM-Business Analytics.
| Programme | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PGDM | 90 | 90 | 92 |
| PGDM-HRM | 90 | 90 | 92 |
| PGDM-International Business | 90 | 90 | 92 |
| PGDM-Business Analytics | Not offered | 90 | 92 |
Source: CAT percentile, admission years 2022-2024, MDI Gurgaon AICTE Mandatory Disclosures. The cutoff for the 2026-28 intake is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27] and will only be knowable once MDI updates its disclosures after the cycle closes.
Read that table correctly, because it is the single most misread number in MDI planning. A percentile listed in a Mandatory Disclosure is the qualifying threshold for being considered β it is the door, not the room. Clearing 92 does not shortlist you, because MDI shortlists on the application form alongside the CAT score, which brings Class X and XII marks, graduation marks, work experience and diversity into play before you are called.
Two practical consequences. First, a candidate at the 93rd percentile with weak Class XII marks and no work experience can be filtered out while a candidate at a similar percentile with three years' experience and an academically diverse background is called. Second, the percentile you need to be genuinely comfortable is higher than the disclosed cutoff, not equal to it. Also note MDI publishes no sectional cutoffs in its disclosures β the figure quoted is an overall percentile. If you are planning around a specific number, write to admissions@mdi.ac.in rather than relying on a coaching-site estimate.
5. Placements: What Is Verifiable
In one line: for the Batch of 2024-26, MDI's own final placement report puts the flagship PGDM entire-batch median at βΉ29.0 L and the average at βΉ29.5 L, with 157 companies participating.
MDI publishes a Final Placement Report on mdi.ac.in and has separately tendered for a consultant firm to audit its placement data against Indian Placement Reporting Standards. The figures below are from the Batch of 2024-26 report. The batch comprised 313 PGDM, 124 PGDM-HRM, 118 PGDM-International Business and 31 PGDM-Business Analytics students; 157 companies participated, 75 of them new recruiters, and 189 pre-placement offers were made.
| Programme | Entire batch median (βΉ) | Entire batch average (βΉ) | Top 10 percentile average (βΉ) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PGDM | 29.0 L | 29.5 L | 45.7 L |
| PGDM-International Business | 25.0 L | 26.3 L | 42.2 L |
| PGDM-Business Analytics | 25.7 L | 26.2 L | 38.3 L |
| PGDM-HRM | 23.0 L | 24.8 L | 39.3 L |
Source: Batch of 2024-26, MDI Gurgaon Final Placement Report.
The honest reading. MDI is one of the few Indian B-schools where median and average sit close together β βΉ29.0 L against βΉ29.5 L for PGDM β which tells you the distribution is not being dragged upward by a handful of outliers. That is a genuinely good sign and more informative than any headline package. But the top-10-percentile average of βΉ45.7 L is roughly 1.6 times the batch median, so the visible "MDI salary" you hear about is not the salary most of the batch takes home. Budget against the median.
A government cross-check exists: MDI's NIRF submission reports a median salary of βΉ26,13,000 for the PG two-year cohort graduating in 2022-23, with 469 of 470 students placed (NIRF 2024, Management Development Institute submission, nirfindia.org). Two independent official sources pointing the same way is stronger evidence than either alone.
6. Campus, Hostel and Living Costs
In one line: hostel and mess are not an extra at MDI β they are already inside the published βΉ26,55,310 fee, at βΉ1,09,750 lodging and βΉ1,04,200 boarding per year (AY2026-28, MDI Gurgaon official PGDM admission page).
This is the answer most applicants get wrong. At the majority of Indian B-schools you add hostel and mess on top of a tuition figure. At MDI's two-year PGDM programmes the fee is quoted all-inclusive, so βΉ26,55,310 is close to the real two-year outlay rather than a starting point. Over two years that is βΉ2,19,500 of lodging and βΉ2,08,400 of boarding already accounted for.
The campus sits at Mehrauli Road, Sukhrali, Gurugram 122007, and MDI's milestones page describes it as spread over 35 acres; the same official record notes the Government of Haryana allotted 36 acres for the campus on 16 May 1975. The programmes are residential. MDI's AICTE Mandatory Disclosures name separate boys' and girls' hostel wardens on the anti-ragging committee, confirming both are operated on campus, and record that more than 80% of buildings have lifts or ramps and specially designed toilets for students with disabilities.
What is not covered by the published fee is personal spending β travel, laptop, clothing for placement season, and the social cost of a Gurugram location. That is [FIGURE MISSING β AY2026-27] because MDI does not publish a personal-expenses estimate, and any number quoted elsewhere is somebody's guess. For the executive PGDM-Business Management, MDI states that basic double-occupancy campus accommodation is included and that single occupancy costs an additional βΉ2,99,600.
7. Who Should NOT Choose MDI Gurgaon
Someone who cannot fund roughly βΉ26.5 L without strain. On a full education loan at prevailing rates, the two-year cost translates into an EMI that consumes a serious share of a βΉ29 L median CTC once tax and Gurugram living costs are taken out. The payback works β but only if you actually convert a median-level offer. Model your own EMI against the median, never the top-10-percentile figure, and never against the headline highest package.
The fresher who assumed a high percentile is enough. MDI shortlists on the application form alongside CAT, so Class X and XII marks and work experience carry real weight. Roughly three-quarters of the 2024-26 batch had work experience, per MDI's own batch profile. A fresher with average academics is competing at a structural disadvantage here in a way they would not be at a school that shortlists on percentile alone.
The candidate set on a public-sector or academic career. MDI awards a diploma, not a degree, because it has no affiliating university. AICTE approval and NBA accreditation make this a non-issue for corporate hiring, but some government recruitment rules and some foreign PhD admissions ask specifically for a degree. If that is your path, confirm equivalence before you accept a seat.
The applicant who wants a specific niche. MDI's strength is broad general management with heavy consulting and BFSI hiring. If your target is a narrow specialism the school does not concentrate in, a smaller school with a deeper industry channel may serve you better than a higher-ranked generalist.
And anyone banking on an IIM-A/B/C brand. MDI is a strong school with a real ranking; it is not a substitute for that specific brand premium, and choosing it as a consolation prize usually produces a disappointed two years.
8. How MDI Gurgaon Compares
Compare on decision axes, not on a single ranking line.
Against IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore, the axis is brand versus cost-and-certainty. The older IIMs carry a stronger recruiter brand and, being government institutions, generally lower published fees. MDI's counter-argument is a tight median-to-average spread and an all-inclusive fee that leaves fewer surprises. If you hold a call from both, the IIM is usually the rational pick on brand alone; MDI becomes interesting when the IIM call is from a newer campus rather than an established one.
Against XLRI Jamshedpur, the axis is HR specialisation. XLRI's HR programme is the older and more established franchise in that discipline. MDI's PGDM-HRM is NBA-accredited and has run since 2004, and MDI's Gurugram location puts students inside the corporate belt β but on HR brand specifically, XLRI leads.
Against FMS Delhi, the axis is pure return on investment. FMS's fee is a fraction of MDI's for comparable Delhi-NCR placement outcomes, which makes it the stronger ROI choice for most candidates who can clear its bar. MDI competes on intake size, residential campus and international accreditation rather than on cost.
Against IIFT Delhi, the axis is international-trade focus. If your intent is genuinely international business, IIFT's specialism runs deeper; MDI's PGDM-International Business, with its ESCP Europe twinning arrangement approved by AICTE, is the closer comparison than MDI's flagship PGDM.
The practical version: MDI is a strong second-tier-of-the-top choice with unusually honest placement reporting and a fee that hides nothing. It is rarely the wrong answer, and rarely the obviously right one over a top-five IIM.
Check affordability before choice filling
Admission route, eligibility and preference order come first. As one decision checkpoint, enter the loan you may need to see the EMI and total interest before locking a college in your counselling choices.
Standard reducing-balance arithmetic on the numbers you enter β your actual rate and moratorium terms depend on the lender. The 40% ceiling is this site's own ROI rule: an EMI above 40% of take-home leaves nothing for rent, food or savings.

Frequently asked questions
Which entrance exams does MDI Gurgaon accept for the two-year PGDM?
For its two-year PGDM programmes at Gurugram, MDI's official admission pages state that CAT 2025 is mandatory for Indian candidates. A valid GMAT score is accepted only from NRI, PIO and foreign-national applicants. XAT is accepted at MDI Murshidabad, a separate campus, not at Gurugram. The 18-month executive PGDM-Business Management accepts CAT, XAT or GMAT.
Do I need work experience to get into MDI Gurgaon?
Not for the flagship PGDM or PGDM-HRM β freshers are eligible. PGDM-International Business does require a four-year bachelor's degree plus a minimum of one year's work experience as on 31 January 2026, and the executive PGDM-Business Management requires three years. However, MDI lists work experience as a component of both shortlisting and final selection, so freshers compete at a disadvantage.
How does MDI Gurgaon shortlist candidates after CAT?
MDI shortlists on the details in your application form together with your CAT 2025 score, then calls shortlisted candidates for a Group Discussion, Written Analysis Test and Personal Interview between February and April 2026. Final selection considers CAT score, WAT-GD-PI performance, a behavioural assessment, academic merit, academic diversity, work experience and social diversity. MDI does not publish the percentage weightage for each component.
Is hostel accommodation included in the MDI Gurgaon fee?
Yes. For the two-year PGDM programmes, MDI's official fee structure for the 2026-28 batch includes lodging at βΉ1,09,750 per year and boarding at βΉ1,04,200 per year within the total of βΉ26,55,310. The programmes are residential and MDI operates separate boys' and girls' hostels on its Gurugram campus, so hostel is not billed as an extra.
How do education loans and fee payment work at MDI Gurgaon?
MDI publishes a three-instalment payment schedule for the 2026-28 PGDM batch, running from April 2026 to May 2027, which most lenders will disburse against. Banks typically sanction against your admission offer letter and the official fee structure. MDI does not publish a consolidated scholarship or loan-tie-up list on its admission pages, so confirm current arrangements directly with admissions@mdi.ac.in before assuming any concession.
How should I verify the latest MDI Gurgaon admission route?
Start with CAT and the institute selection process. Then match the current prospectus, application notice and counselling schedule on the official authority or institute website. A route from an older cycle should not be assumed to remain unchanged.
How should I read the MDI Gurgaon cutoff shown on this page?
Read the exam, year, round, category, quota, branch and closing-rank or percentile label together. A cutoff from another category or an earlier round is not a promise of admission in the current cycle.
How do I confirm the complete fee for MDI Gurgaon?
Use the current official fee notice and add tuition, development or university charges, deposits, hostel, mess and other compulsory costs. Ask for the payable amount and refund terms in writing before transferring money.
Extended admission FAQs
Do placement figures guarantee an outcome at MDI Gurgaon?
No. A highest, average, median or placement-rate figure describes a particular batch and methodology. Prefer a completed, dated report with batch size and branch-level context; it cannot guarantee an individual salary or job.
Can anyone guarantee direct admission to MDI Gurgaon?
No counsellor can override eligibility, merit, counselling or the institute's published process. Use only official portals and receipts, and do not pay an individual who promises a confirmed seat outside the documented route.
Which documents should I prepare for MDI Gurgaon admission?
Keep the current exam scorecard, identity and nationality proof, Class 10 and 12 records, leaving or transfer certificate, allotment letter and payment receipt. Domicile, category, income, NCL, EWS, migration, gap or NRI documents apply only where the current authority requires them.
What should I compare before placing MDI Gurgaon in my preference list?
Compare the exact branch or programme, admission probability, total cost, location, accreditation, published outcomes and a realistic fallback option. Never list a college you would be unable or unwilling to join if allotted.
What if a current MDI Gurgaon figure is still unverified?
Treat it as pending rather than filling the gap with an aggregator estimate. Use the previous completed cycle only as historical context and wait for the competent authority or institute to publish the current figure.
How current is the information on this MDI Gurgaon page?
The page shows its publication or update date and keeps changing figures tied to an academic year. No page-specific primary source is registered yet, so current figures require direct verification.
How can Future Career Guidance help with MDI Gurgaon admission?
We help interpret eligibility, compare realistic options, organise documents and build a preference or application plan. We do not guarantee allotment, bypass merit or collect unofficial cash premiums for seats.
Which source takes priority if two MDI Gurgaon figures conflict?
Use the newest document issued by the competent counselling authority, regulator or institute for the same year, quota and programme. A dated primary document takes priority over an undated webpage, brochure summary or third-party listing.
